Hi Mike, Hi everyone.

To be honest, i came to this forum hoping to get answers to so many confusion in my head about music.

I am new to music composition, i have no SoundCloud channel. I am one of Mikeā€™s students on one of the MOOC learning platform he lectures on.

I actually would love to play like him someday :hugs:.

After reading some introductions, I feel a sudden boost of confidence knowing I am surrounded by awesome and professional music composers killing it in their own waysā€¦

I hoping I would pick up good music/sound design skills and make living doing it full time, at 45 yrs of age. I know it wonā€™t be that easy and I am not sure if it will be worth it but i figured I have nothing to lose by giving it a short.

I will like to warn you guys ahead though.
Since i am the baby in this forum filled with high caliber music top guns, i will definitely ask some stupid questions that can make you go nutā€¦. However, I can assure you it will be one less, which is lso good news .

I see you all as my teachers, do always feel free to teach me like your 2 year old.

Nice meeting you all and I am really happy to be here.

Thanks.
Tomiwa.

Welcome to the Professional Composers forum Tomiwa!
Oh yes indeed there are so many things to learn and practice to improve within music. But as you can see we have different sections for topics in various areas.

Now of course, as with anything in life, the best way to learn is to constantly practice. Whether that is piano/keyboard or any instrument, composing in your favorite DAW, creating sounds in a synthesizer etc. So my best tip will always be: keep practicing by doing!

Sincerely
Mike

This is awesome!
The chord dwells and progression is just as perfect as Mike taught it.
And I can really feel the thrusters.
A nice Sci-fi ambient.
I love it.

Welcome! I try to explain to friends and family how I feel compelled to write, and the tremendous emotional lift I get from composing music that others can enjoy as much as I do. Music is such a wonderful blessing, and it is such a privilege to have ability and love of composing! I know you feel the same. I look forward to hearing some of your work!

Iā€™m an hobbyist who came to this forum via Michaels courses too. I donā€™t have many musical advices, but I can tell you one thing: Whether you are 25 or 45 should make no difference as long as you love what you are doing. Happy music making.

Good day, everyone!

My name is Stan Bann. I am a Minnesota based composer, arranger, orchestrator, educator, and performer.

I graduated from Berklee College of Music with a degree in Jazz Composition. When I got married and started a family the pragmatic side of me led me to get an MBA in Management (aka ā€œthe day gigā€). I then spent thirty years in IT and Management consulting. During this time I continued to learn, write, perform, adjudicate, and record. Now that the kids are adults and thriving on their own (proud papa here!) I have returned to my initial career path of writing music.

My primary focus is on jazz and concert music particularly for wind ensembles although I write for other instrumentations both acoustic and digital. I am the principal trombonist and euphonium for two different concert bands in Minneapolis and a composer / conductor / performer with the Minneapolis Trombone Choir.

My website is www.stanbann.com
Links to and samples from my most recent album ā€œPenmanshipā€ along with other sound files, videos, endorsements, and my landscape photography can be found on my website.
I am on Soundcloud so check out my most recent virtual/digital offering: ā€œWith Youā€
I am on YouTube as StanBannMusic

Thank you for indulging a rather rambling introduction. Iā€™m very much looking forward to our paths crossing and our following them wherever they may lead!

Sincerely,
Stan

Hello eveyone!

Itā€™s Eero Karvonen here. Iā€™m from Finland. A science teacher by official education, my true passion is in composing. Iā€™ve been working as a part-time multimedia entrepreneur since 2015 (as the sole proprietor of Sharp Dis-Chord) creating websites, graphics, IT applications, and occasionally producing music as well as a local annual music festival (The Hailuoto Music Festival).

Despite of having composed music in one way or another for over 15 years, I only consider myself a professional composer since 2015, when I was hired to compose my first mobile game soundtrack (Roll & Rock: Original Soundtrack). Since then, my original compositions ranging from folk pieces to a Baroque-style concerto have been performed publicly in the recent years.

For years Iā€™ve been trying to figure out a way to make composing my number one source of income, so I could go all in at it. Since autumn 2016, Iā€™ve been slowly working towards building the knowledge, skills and exact plans required to enter the stock music licensing business. During these otherwise challenging times, I have managed to put out my first production music album: Corporate Circus by Jigsound (which is the, by the way, the name of my licensing business). The full catalog is, for the time being, only available for licensing through Pond5.

Iā€™m a very technically oriented person, always looking for ways to automate tedious workflows. After releasing my first album, Iā€™m now writing a custom-tailored desktop application in Python/PyQt, which fills in P.R.O. reports, generates appropriate audio file formats, manages metadata and automated descriptions, exports CSV files for Pond5, and eventually makes an AudioJungle package from the selected edits with a single click.

Sometimes my brain overheats with new ideas, so Iā€™m very much looking forward to sharing insights with the community and learning new perspectives. Thanks for taking me on board! :slightly_smiling_face:

All the best!
Eero

Welcome Stan, and thank you for your great introduction. I love hearing/reading the background of new members, and honestly, how can we relate and form relationships without actually getting to know each other?

I think we can all relate to the pragmatism you mentioned, as it is a big undertaking making any decent money within art and music, and we all know this.

Iā€™m glad to hear you found a niche that works for you, and I am certain your experience and expertise will be much appreciated in the forums of this community. On that note, please dive right in and join the discussions, ask questions, and explore the various sections and topics here.

Iā€™m looking forward to connect with you more in here!

Welcome Eero, it is a pleasure having you join us!
Ah science, I love science. At least I love reading about it, the history, the discoveries over time, and the exciting things that are explored today.

What an interesting mix of projects you do with your own company. Is this because you get too bored focusing on only one field, or is it more pragmatic as in ā€˜easierā€™ to make a living with a wider range of services?

I LOVE systems that create efficiency, and I am looking forward to learn from you in various aspects on how you do things, from the discussions in the forum. I think the metadata and efficient organization topic could be a great discussion thread in here. I will post a new topic soon on this, and hope you join in.

PS. With your professional/business background, and your big ambitions, I would love to invite you to be part of my professional networking group. An exclusive VIP area with only selected professionals in it. Would you care to be part of it, there are no obligations other than being available for networking/connecting?

Sincerely

Hey all, my name is Joshua Sohn and Iā€™m 32. I currently work as an assistant to a composer in TV & Film. Heā€™s worked for Rupert Greggson-Williams for a few years before branching out to his own studio. While working for my boss, I also do my own music projects with local indie filmmakers. Iā€™d like to keep growing and learning to become the best composer I can be. Making a living in music is no easy task and Iā€™m determined to keep at it. I see a lot of familiar faces and am glad to be part of the community!

Hi, Mike!

To your first question: Iā€™d say it has been far more as in ā€œone project leads to anotherā€. It has been a wonderful experience to branch out and learn new things with each different project while making new connections. However, for the future, Iā€™m going less and less at selling my time per se and more into building scalable business.

A thread regarding metadata and efficient organization sounds like a great idea. Iā€™m definitely going to see if I can contribute in useful ways to that topic!

Regarding the VIP group question: Iā€™m honoured to be invited and absolutely in for it. :slightly_smiling_face:

Best

I completely understand what you mean by one thing leads to the next. My own business is intentionally focused on selling products as opposed to selling my time. I know the immediate return is bigger with consulting/services, but as a person I prefer the freedom of ā€œpassive incomeā€ (there is of course nothing as true passive income, but Iā€™m sure you know what I mean here).

If that is the direction you will go into in the future, Iā€™m sure both myself and several fellow members in here can give you tips/advice in various aspects for this path.

PS. I just created a discussion topic on ā€œMetadataā€ optimization/organization.

Sincerely
Mike

Hi Michael,

Sorry, it took nearly a month to reply. As you might understand - I was busy with some of my projects  Wow, you started as a DJ tooā€¦ I guess it helps to produce music in some instances. Definitely dance music. Haha! About the DAWs. Well, I have not installed the latest Logic Pro X 1.5 yet, but it is on my wish list
We definitely keep in touch as Iā€™m sure I will find a lot in common with some of the members and may be involved in a few projects together in the future  Fingers crossed!!!

Greetings,

Here is the short version. I started on piano at 4, French Horn at 10, Mixed my first live show at 11. And began copy work in high school charting marching band music. I am a composer, sound designer (musical theater), conductor and copyist. Since Iā€™m 55, I guess Iā€™ve been at it a while.

I write primary for musical theater. Whether its supplemental music, vamps, intro/exit music or SFX, or rearranging for flow, itā€™s what I love. I also have a few whom I mentor In songwriting, orchestration, music theory, and music production.

I recently graduated from Full Sailā€™Universityā€™s Bachelor in Music Production, so if you have questions about the school or the program, Iā€™ll be happy to give you honest answers. Iā€™ll even help you ace your assignments. Point of reference, I was able to attend for free, and decided to do it . Did I learnā€¦absolutely. Is it worth it, yes.

I got my first midi rig in 1985 and have never looked back. I finally retired my fountain pen, and cancelled my account at Judy Green Music, in 1997 when I started using Finale.

I am also somewhat of a philosopher, so if I answer your question with a question, Iā€™m either seeking clarification, which I will state, or Iā€™m trying to persuade you to jump in the rabbit hole, trying to get you to change your perspective or view. I like the quote attributed to Mark Twain, ā€œYou can feed a man a fish, and he eats dinner, or you can teach a man to fish And he eats for the rest of his life. I like teaching people to fish.

Glad to be part of this forum
